Don't Etisalat and Du have the means to find out if you're using a VPN?

With all the BlackBerry paranoia I'd be surprised if they didn't

Quite possibly. Though there are legitimate business reasons for using a VPN: ban VPNs and you stop employees from establishing secure links to their companies.

Then again, there are legitimate business reasons for using a Blackberry too...

Well yes and no. That's kind of the whole issue. They probably know that you are using it, but not what you are doing on it.

I've been advised that it's Skype and other VoIP services that they get a hard-on about and just tolerate anything else.

Does anyone out there use the Viscosity VPN software? It looks to be a bargain at $40

They absolutely can not ban VPNs. Almost all of the major companies in Internet City, and even most of the country's own banks, need VPNs to work, from their ATMs to communicating with foreign branches and offices.

If they were stupid enough to ban VPNs, the only major worldwide industries that would be left here is the world's oldest professional and the oil industry.

In other words, it simply isn't possible, unless they want every major company in the country to pull out.

No, but a VPN (best thing to do is get two IPs – one UK and the other US) will allow you to watch TV while streaming (i.e. BBC iPlayer in the UK and Hulu in the US)
