Just looking...
So...I'm sure you get asked this all the time but how hard is finding a job in the UAE. I'd be looking at late 2009 as a moving date. Really I'm looking for an adventure, somewhere new, vibrant and different.
Relevant educational stuff: - Diploma in Civil Engineering (including lots of CAD stuff). - Currently studying Biochemistry at University (will be finished this in late 2009). Relevant work stuff: - A years experience working for a major international engineering consultancy. - Two years working in a water/soil/materials testing lab as a technician. - Two years in sales. - Part own and run a small business in the services industry. So by day I'm a student but by night (sometimes, just for pocket money and thrills) I have the dubious/bizarre job of teaching socially inept boys how to chat up girls successfully! :D I'm actually an expat from Herefordshire but I've lived in 4 other countries (Ireland, U.S., Australia and now New Zealand). I'm 22 and have lived in the UK less than a quarter of my life! So what do you think, am I wasting my time? Do I need more qualifications/experience to realistically have a decent shot at living a decent lifestyle out there? Thanks for any advice in advance. |

I've just come back from a reccy in Dubai where I used to live in the early 90's. I was considering a move back but the place has lost it for me. You pay through the nose for a poxy little apartment with the constant threat of the landlord trying to get rid of you to increase his rental yield. Also, if you drive around a new residential area like the Springs you find streets and streets of identical semi detached houses which cost a fortune to rent but have no swimming pools and there are only a handful of communal ones to serve a vast area. Further, Dubai is one big ugly construction site. The pollution, which was minimal 15 years ago, is now very noticable (there seems to be a constant brown haze hanging in the air). The areas which have shot out of the sand (Dubai Marina, Sheikh Zaid road building etc.) have lots of nice and shiny skyscrapers but its bland and the place has no soul. Arranging a taxi is a headache. Beachclubs are very expensive. Alternative is to go public. I went to Jumerah beach Park one day and was stared at by everyone as I was the only white face on the beach. Also, you don't want to take your wife to such places or she will attract offensive attention from the indian subcontinent workers.
Racism is a way of life in Dubai. Always has been, always will be. Schools costs for international kids are astronomical. It's all about making tax free money. If you can make allot of it there (and that's definitely possible) then go for it - you'll need it. But be prepared for the negatives as well. One last thing...don't take kids. They'll spend their childhood in shopping malls or racing from one air conditioned building to another. They'll hate the humidity. There - it's off my chest. |

In fact, no. There are traffic jams everywhere. Even at 4 in the morning. Don't even bother to try and cut your costs by living in Sharjah. You'll end up living in your car. Etisalat the telecoms provider block the use of Skype (or so I'm told). Porn is also blocked (if you're bothered) and there's tons of graffiti on the rocks at Hatta water pools. Wild wadi is good though...
