Job opportunity in Dubai, but what can husband do?

Hi there

I am getting quite a few phone calls about jobs in Dubai (I am an accountant, with a bit of experience in offshore). originally I wanted to stay in Europe, but I think when these opportunities come up, it is worth considering...
The main problem is my husband.. he works in IT (SQL) and reading from this forum the opportunity of finding a job in IT is next to nil. So should I scrap this idea before it has even started??

Thanks!!

Really depends a lot on what your respective current job situations are. I'm assuming that both of you are very well paid and in reasonably senior positions.

Since you've been getting several calls, the options you could consider are:

1) If your OH is happy to make the move and does not mind a pay cut (no idea, but am guessing that the IT industry -if you can call it that here, doesn't pay top bucks) - then he could look for a job first and then you can look around for one.

2) You come here first, see whether you like the place enough to continue, meanwhile he could look for a job and join you later (or you could return back if you don't like it here)

Good luck...

Just done a brief search on Monstergulf with these results.http://jobsearch.monstergulf.com/searchresult.html

IT sector in the UK took a Hammering back in 2001 and has not really recovered since. Most jobs within the IT sector are paying less than they were 6-7 years ago and they want more now for their money. Rather than just a Unix Systems Engineer, (Loike wot I am), now they want a system engineer with Apache/perl experience too! Damed unreasonable, expecting me to work for me pay!

Back on subject, reckon he should be OK. Go for it.

he should be ok I've had friends move out there and got IT jobs no problem although instead of hardcore programming etc they moved into management positions.

with SQL experience he may want to look at re-training in SAP or SPSS and from that going on to becoming an analyst... i've been looking at this recently and there seem to be plenty opportunities for business analysts in the UAE even with limited experience of SQL i think i'd pick it up pretty quickly so he should have no problems

Hi all

Thanks a lot for your replies, we actually had a think about this and probably will go to check the place out before we move (although all my previous moves were without seeing the place first!).
He actually does really want to be a Business Analyst over a programming guy, which is kind of what he does at the moment, I guess the main worry is that we may decide to move and he can't find a job (this has sadly happened before, and as they say, twice burned...)

Thanks!
