Default Job offer from King Faisal Hospital in Riyadh

Hi Everyone

I have recently, just last week, been offered a job at King Faisal Specialist Hospital. I am excited yet nervous and am still thinking re the offer, in addition to, revising the contract slightly. I have been offered a single status contract, however, at the interview I was told I would receive a marriage status contract (my wife is a near qualified primary teacher so she is also hoping to work find a job there), so I requested that be changed before I'd consider the contract. I have e a few questions, that I'd hope with all your experiences you could answer for me:

1) Regarding moving your family over, is it a difficult process? How long does it usually take once I arrived?
2) What is life like in Riyadh? Is there much to do socially?
3) How is the accommodation like that KFSH offers?
4) How easy is it to rent a car?

Sorry if I have thrown everything at you guys, I just want to have all possible information regarding life in KSA before accepting the position.
Thank you in advance!

Adam

Welcome to BE and good luck!

I can't help with your questions, but would suggest having a search of past threads, might not be many on the school, but there are plenty about life to do in the place...

[QUOTE=Adam55;10565573]

Just saw your post and will try to answer.

1) Regarding moving your family over, is it a difficult process? How long does it usually take once I arrived?

My first contract at another hospital (as a single) took about 2 months. The recruitment agency took care of it and it went smoothly. I got my Iqama (residency permit) 4 weeks after arrival in KSA.
KFSH&RC should have a decent system in place for bringing staff as they have tens of thousands of expats working there, including many westerners.

2) What is life like in Riyadh? Is there much to do socially?

It can be challenging but will depend on you. There is opportunity for many social activities. At the hospital you will meet a lot of people and could have quite a decent life here. It's a much better situation than, for example, the guys who arrive and are the only western expat in their company. Nurses are always a great source of what's happening in Riyadh.

3) How is the accommodation like that KFSH offers?

Not sure, but seems fine from what I heard. Used to have single friends there but they always met me out somewhere. The accommodation is gender segregated, not sure how they deal with family accommodation.

4) How easy is it to rent a car?
I think you need an Iqama and KSA drivers licence. A man will need to answer this :-) My husbands KSA driving test involved getting in the car and driving 30 ft in a straight line.

Good luck

I rent without Iqama and KSA license when I'm in Riyadh. UK licence and International Driving Permit thing should do the trick. Latter not needed sometimes.

There's all the usual names like Hertz, Sixt, Avis, Budget (but worth remembering these are Saudi franchises). Also a load of local companies Wefaq, Key.

Long term car hire would start around 1,800 pm for a new small saloon I guess. Daily rates 120/day. Some pals hire crappy old yank tanks for 2,400 pm (5 year old Trailblazers etc)

Thanks for the replies!

I have just recieved my revised contract that includes a family status contract. In addition, I have been told I will be allowed SAR2085 as accommodation allowance. I'm not entirely sure if this is a good amount, a quick scan online has shown me I may be able to get something worthwhile in a compound.
Will that allowance get me much?

Per month? 23k per year? Forget it, a compound villa is 200000 per year in RIyadh, even a crappy compound will cost you 100000 per year.

DD's assessment of compound prices is accurate. Private western compounds are far out of reach of a standard hospital housing allowance.

On that allowance you might get a 1 bed apartment in Sulaimania (though I expect realistically you would need closer to 30k per year for rent). You also have to factor in utilities, satellite tv and internet. Also transport to KFSH which would probably be about SR10 each way in a taxi. Hospital transport allowances are typically SR600 (or less) per month so renting a car you would need to supplement. Sulaimania is a nice enough area with many shops and restaurants, bit of course you will be isolated from other western expats (though there are a few living in that area). Also you need to consider your wife, as her freedoms will be very restricted.

Another option is to check out National Guard Hospital for jobs, as their housing is mixed gender (and very nice) and may be more flexible than KFSH. However it is typically only managers or MD's who are offered married contracts and housing. RN's, Allied Health etc are typically on single contract though there are many married couples who both work at the hospital and live in married accommodation. Though your wife is a newly qualified primary teacher you could try applying as a couple to NGH. The hospital (and attached medical college) is massively expanding and there are education/co-ordinator roles that while not exactly her profession, they might find something for her to get you there. Maybe a longshot, but worth asking.

Thanks for your replies. What is the accommodation like outside the compounds? To be honest, I don't mind living outside the compounds as I have visited KSA before for pilgrimage and didn't find it that bad.. Could you get a 2BR flat/apartment for that much. I'm willing to pay upto 50kSAR a year..

Yes, you will get a decent 2 bedroom apartment for that budget, though it will vary depending on location and facilities. Your wife will probably not be allowed to use the gym/pool if there is one.
I would recommend looking for a place close to the hospital as traffic in Riyadh is terrible. KFSH is very central and there should be decent apartments nearby. Riyadh north is also the "better" area.
If your wife is interested in direct hire (non-sponsored) jobs like nursery schools or teaching assistant jobs you can look at this website: http://www.wsb-ksa.com/
Living off compound is fine in my opinion. Some people even prefer it. It will entirely depend on you and your wife's expectations and flexibility. You will have decent contacts through work to establish a social life.

A bit off topic, but I'm currently working with NGHA on a fairly major IT project for them.

I don't work there anymore, but if anyone is looking for a hospital gig in the ME it's a pretty good place to work overall.
