Default Israel and Iran...

There seems to be a significant increase in media coverage / speculation of Israel attacking Iran currently...

Any thoughts on how this will all pan out?

If it does all kick off - what will the implications be for the UAE...?

Shadow of war looms as Israel flexes its muscle

Israeli fighter jets flew 1,500 kms across the Mediterranean this month, in a dry run for an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities. Tehran has threatened to treat such a raid as a declaration of war. As the Middle East braces itself for a stand-off of epic proportions, how close is the region to that nightmare scenario?

Washington: John Bolton, the former American ambassador to the United Nations, has predicted that Israel could attack Iran after the US presidential election in November, but before George W. Bush's successor was sworn in.

The Arab world would be "pleased" by Israeli strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities, he said in an interview with The Daily Telegraph.

If iran attacked any Gulf country, the price of oil will increase so much.. it may reach 200 or 300 if not more.

this will affect the whole world.

people in Iran knows this very well and they know that instade of israel and US only as emanies ..they will be againest the whole world who needs oil and without it .. ecomonies will crash down.

therefore ...

i don't think .. people including westerns will be under danger in here.

That is one of the silliest statements I have read in a long time...well, that and one of the UAE radio stations announcing this morning that Robert Mugabe was going to win the Presidential Election by a substantial margin.

Given Israel's track record of taking out nuke facilities in Iraq & Syria, it would come as little surprise to see them doing the same in Iran....

What would be the fall-out (sic) - well, I imagine Iran would escalate the proxy war in Lebanon. Doubt that they'd have the wherewithal to launch a direct assault.... European govmts (excluding, perhaps, the UK) would condemn the action. The USA would purse their lips.

Within 2 years it would all die down and the usual mess would continue.

The Iranian facilities are burried under 23 meters of re-inforced concrete... it'll be nothing like the Syrian strike. It would need to be a sustained attack with US non-intervention.

President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney have rejected findings from U.S. intelligence agencies that Iran has halted a clandestine effort to build a nuclear bomb and "do not want to leave Iran in place with a nuclear program," Hersh said.

"They believe that their mission is to make sure that before they get out of office next year, either Iran is attacked or it stops its weapons program," Hersh said.

Iran will block the Strait of Hormuz if it is attacked, and if you think oil prices are high now, just you wait...

From The Guardian article:

If Israel were to attack it would have to overcome considerable practical problems. There is no one who believes that an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities would be anything like Opera, when eight F-16s and a similar number of F-15s crept into Iraq. For one thing, in pursuing its nuclear ambitions, Iran took note of the Osirak lessons. Its facilities, including a light water reactor at Bushehr and the controversial uranium enrichment process at Natanz, are dispersed and, in the case of Natanz, protected by up to 23 metres of hardened concrete.

To destroy the uranium centrifuge halls at Natanz alone, analysts have argued, might require up to 80 5,000lb penetrating bombs dropped in almost simultaneous pairs to allow the second bomb to burrow through the crater of the first. Opera required just a handful of bombs.

The head of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guards has threatened to hurt Western economies by cutting off Gulf oil supplies if his country's nuclear facilities are attacked.

With speculation growing that Israel or America might strike Iran's nuclear sites, Major General Mohammed Ali Jafari also said Iran would consider launching missiles at the Jewish state and attacking any neighbouring countries that helped American forces.

That'll include the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi then....

Not forgetting Qatar, where the US have their biggest base.
