I think the confusion comes from how they mix terminology sometimes.
Absinthe is an 'unlock' of the phone from Apple's grip, also called a jailbreak. The unlock you need is called 'carrier unlock' and will probably be released soon as an app through Cydia (the jailbreak appstore) called UltraSn0w. |

Ok so meantime, it's a non-starter unless I go to Three right?

Cheers Norsk, as ever you're the one with the good advice. I hope the Dubai move has been a good one. There has been far less teargas and explosions in the last week but nobody's sure if it's just the calm before the Feb 14th storm. We're going on holiday to avoid it......
dubai move was brilliant so far, shame to leave bahrain in a way as i liked living there but work in saudi was not good and then when things kicked off that was kind of the last nail in the coffin.. i don't blame you going away. i would have done exactly the same. it's bound to kick off isn't it. what's happening with the F1 by the way? if that's still on i may make my way to bahrain for a visit.. |

There is still huge opposition to it taking place but who knows with this place? I was briefly in Dubai last week and enjoyed the calm and trouble free atmosphere...we'll see what happens ;)

So what is the link via Absinthe? It seems to say it can unlock it? These unlocking sites generally seem to be full of crap....
I got it from the Three network - maybe their customer services in the UK would be a place to start but I've also heard that the unlock won't work outside of the UK. FFS! Now that the phone is under your control you should be able to unlock the sim carrier, this will basically be an app you can download onto the phone. however this is not yet developed but its expected shortly. Aside from the carrier unlock the jailbreak is good as it allows you to use lots of apps otherwise restricted by apple. |

There is also a hacker side to the whole jailbreak scene so you can for example find apps that cost money through the AppStore for free. Not that I condone piracy. Check out the website I linked to in an earlier post for more info. |
