IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM THE British Embassy

IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM THE British Embassy
Just got this as a forward...
I'm surprised they are 'relentless in arresting citizens throughout the UAE'... I assume our friends at the embassy mean residents.

Dear Colleagues
I am contacting you to pass on important information that we have received from Dubai police
From 1st July the drug called, Space, Spice or K2 (as the students refer to it) has been confirmed as an illegal substance in the UAE. I should perhaps tell you that on the first day we had 35 British nationals arrested and detained, it has escalated from there. The Narcotics Department at Dubai Police HQ have been relentless in arresting citizens throughout the UAE and are “determined” to prevent the usage of the drug in their country.
I had a meeting at the Public Prosecutors office and they have informed us that the will make examples of anyone caught, that includes young adults. A mandatory four year sentence will be applied followed by deportation. If a person is caught supplying to anyone else there is a mandatory 15 year sentence.
Can I ask you to please pass on this information to your students as it has come to our attention that it is being widely used in the schools across the UAE and there are students they are buying and supplying to others?
If you have any questions please let me know.
Kind regards

Re: IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM THE British Embassy
Is that really from the British Embassy? Just meant as an informal, internal note, or intended for a wider audience (eg us)?

Yes and no. Yes they mean UAE residents, and no, I have a feeling they're (stupidly) using it as shorthand for British citizens. (Stupidly because as we all know, citizen out here in the context of the UAE means something else altogether).

Re: IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM THE British Embassy
Heard about this last week, the Embassy were apparently going round schools and telling teachers about it.
Apparently 'the kids' are ordering this stuff online and its getting stopped at customs. They are telling the cops, who then track the package and bust the kids when they collect it/take deliver.

How do these kids order something online without a credit or debit card?

Fair point. However, if there have been 35 kids given 4 year sentences here (or at least banged up awaiting trial) I'm surprised it hasn't hit the headlines somewhere...Jeez. Hopefully the authorities are using the embassy (and embassies of other western countries) as a warning system. Can you really buy drugs online?

My opinion is that if this is indeed true the Dubai authorities are going about this completely in the wrong way. What's the point in putting kids in jail for 4 years when they probably aren't even aware that they are breaking the law? Making an example of them? Well, that makes it all better doesn't it...

And before things are made illegal, as this stuff the kids here were buying was before 1st July, then it can be bought easily and freely - take all the 'legal highs' that are openly on sale at music festivals in the UK.
