GP Consultant Rank Pay - PHCC Qatar
 

Hi

I need some guidance on the kind of pay scales PHCC use for Female GP Consultant Rank positions. I know that PHCC now requires publications for any positions above the Specialist rank but am not clear on what the pay scales are. Any guidance from someone who has recently worked or is currently working at PHCC would be much appreciated.

You might well be correct in your thinking. I don't know how many people there are in Qatar in such position but presumably its not a large number as a percentage of the population, the chance of there being one here is possibly remote.
Be aware that in most positions in Qatar, and indeed across the wider gulf region, pay is often based directly or more surreptitiously on ethnicity. That coupled with the general divide and conquer approach to management means that pay is often both personal and unique.
For most people in any occupation I would say that the key driver to working in this region should be one that provides a substantial finacial incentive over that which is available elsewhere. Depending on your home location this 'substantial incentive' could vary significantly.
Since you are obviously affiliated with relevant professional bodies it might be hoped that they have a local chapter or contact that might provide some clearer ideas.

Hey Martin... Thanks for your reply. My query is regarding Family Physicians pay and perks in Doha. I am from the UK and was in Doha during the christmas break. I met a few GPs from the UK who have all been there for a couple of years or more and were enjoying the work/life balance as well as the tax free salaries. I was actually tryng to find out the current salaries packages being offered to GPs from the UK by PHCC or any other healthcare provider in Qatar. I have heard rumours that the salaries being offered are a lot lower than they were 12-18 months ago.

Hi, If you met a few GP's then I guess you are using those as indicators as to the expectations. I think there have been some changes perhaps over the last 2-5 years so far as salaries go in general. Education from other parts of the world has been improving to some degree albeit woefully short of what it tends to be in more developed countries. Then again more people from less developed countries are being educated in places like the UK and USA. These people will still work for next to nothing in some parts of the world and that I think is starting to impact average salaries in the region.

I'm not in the medical world but in my own field I know that people who can get a western education even with relatively poor performance, such as to be almost unemployable say in the UK, faced with going home for a salary of 2/5ths of a jelly bean will happily take a whole bean to work in a place like Doha. I doubt you'd be happy with a whole bag of beans. Now the Qatari's know all this but provided they can keep enough of the better qualified people around they are happy to make up the numbers with the also-rans for far fewer beans. So you need to be sure you are heading for the former group not the latter. Even so I think there has been a squeeze, the blockade costs billions and the oil price is not exactly helping.

Next you have to wonder where Qatar in general is heading. Much of the big noise is about to come to a shuddering halt. 2022 is but a short way ahead and much of the heavy work is done. Large road construction projects seem to be in decline. Football stadiums are at or nearing completion for the most part, the metro rail project is up and running with just a few more sections to be added in, Lusail is built, and mostly empty. O&G has been in a bit of a decline based on pricing. About the biggest projects on the block seem to be the airport additional terminals and upgrades. I think the port is completed and other than one or two other minor projects there seems little that will attract the large numbers that have been there for the last ten years or so. I'm certainly curious to see what the plan looks like in 5 years time.

Thanks for a very informative analysis Martin.You have raised some very pertinent points and I think they will need to be considered very seriously by anyone thinking of moving to Qatar over the next couple of years, Post 2022 Qatar need very careful analysis... especially by Brits who are well settled i the UK with young families!
