However I have had 2 clients not pay which has put a strain on my company.

Obviously I have a little'un due in 4 weeks so im not going anywhere yet.

However, if the market does not improve then Im off to either Sydney or Brisbane.

Whilst I know the local market wont improve, most of my work is in Saudi and West Africa, the latter being somewhat unaffected due to their lack of globalisation to date so hopefully things will be ok.

a bit more complicated for us due to visa requirements for my wife.

I hope it works out, I know how much effort you have put into this.

I think a clean/easy exit strategy is possible only if one has:
  • Minimal debts or better still 0 debts
  • No illiquid assets (e.g. property, expensive cars) to tie you to the place
  • Savings to tide you through until you find another job.

My exit strategy is the same as it has always been. Stay until something better comes along, then leave. Meanwhile, try to save as much money as possible. The way the UK (and world) economy is at the moment it looks like I'll be here until I retire!
