Question Filteres Internet

I read recently about the UEA being behind a proxy server, enforced by the government. Does this mean the entire Internet in the UAE is filtered and monitored? Is there no privacy via email, etc. at all? To what extent is this monitored?

If anyone has any good online resources for this, or personal feedback, I would be most interested.

I hear AOL were just taken offline for providing a prixy workaround...

From what I know, the internet in the UAE is filtered from pornographic and political content by the only UAE ISP, Emirates Internet and Multimedia. If your email has a secure connection you can connect and check your email completely secure, but how many people do that anyway. Yes I also heard that AOL was blocked because they had a proxy service they were providing to users.
