'Fair' Usage

I saw an ad for Etisalat's 'Unlimited Broadband' offer today. AED 99 and a free USB modem. A few questions arise however:-

Has anybody used this and what is the speed/service like?

Will it be fast enough to watch video streams?

I see it is subject to a 'fair usage' limit of 10GB so not unlimited  at all but how does that work if I am streaming the World Cup matches? Is that alot of download capacity taken up?

Thanks in advance

I'm on elife so have 100gb / month

We watch all TV and Radio over the internet - daily usage is probably 6 hours of radio, 2-3 hours of TV in one room and 2 hours of TV in another (so total around 6 hours). The logs say that we are using around 2-2.5 gb/day...

streaming TV peaks at around 350kb/s (but due to buffering is actually on average only around 160kb/s). I estimate it at around 0.6gb/ hour. Careful though streaming HD will times that number by 4.

So for standard iplayer low-res: 10gb, is 16 hours, or 8 games including extra time...

No worries. do be careful about all the other usage you put through the pipe by too... e.g. emails with attachments, utorrent, normal internet usage etc.

although stuff like messenger is almost non-measureable.

If you are worried, I can send you a link to a small download that monitors the usage.

Read the fine print - AED 99 is an introductory offer. The price goes up after 3 months and the people at Etisalat were unable to tell me what that price will be. Etisalat is so ignorant it's scary.

How do you find that out? I'm online a hell of a lot and am getting worried that I'm close or over it...

if you have an etishite router then it is simple:

1) open your internet page
2) type 192.168.1.1 into the bit where you normally type www.google.com
3) you will now log in to your router (you may need to login in, etishite default login is, i think, 'admin' and your mobile number for the password)
4) my router/modem has a 'status' page followed by Network Statistics
5) under 'ethernet' I can see : Rx Total Bytes
6) divide this (very big) number by 1024 and then 1024 again to get GB.

This is the amount used since it was last rebooted/ reset.

it resets after 10gb I think... so monitor it for a day or so and you will get a feel for how much you use.

I got a bit addicted to checking it for a while, but then I started to wonder if the fridge light was switching off which caused me more concern.
