Default Expats leaving Dubai - Is it a bad dream

I read in the National today that the stories regarding expats leaving Dubai as a result of redundancy are grossly exaggerated.

This was as quoted by the Director of Naturalization and Residency, and as supported and stated on the Royal web site.

Maybe I will wake up tomorrow with a job, and find that all the developers and contractors have not laid off tens of thousands, and our friends are still here and have not gone home or leaving in June at the end of the school year

Is it a bad dream ??????????

but i think it must be somewhat exaggerated...within my social, and work circle...and the relevant extended circles from all these people, i don't know of anyone who is leaving unless they had already planned to leave...if there really were the numbers being suggested, i'd surely hear of at least one first hand...

I know of quite a few unfortunately.

We will see at the end of the school year, or rather the beginning of the next.

But I do think it depends on your circle. If I only had my O & G circle of friends, I would have heard of none.. But a neighbour is in Construction and, BOY, its been like the Battle of the Somme, the amount of casualties of this mess....

you will be surprised how many will just 'vanish' trust me, you will think they are doing great, no problems etc, then in September you will wonder where they are. Some people keep stuff like this very close to their chests, it's a Brit thing. Immigration are cancelling 2000 visas a day

Madam M has a point.
My circle is obviously property/construction and it is carnage.

I am probably aware of large companies in my industry that have either closed or shrunk to 25-30% and can count in excess of 20,000 redundancies.
Several of those remaining I know off have taken significant pay cuts.

Most people I know off, have left or planning to leave.

Other industries are laying off but in smaller numbers.

Friends we have in other industries, it is sort of business as usual but with a trimming of numbers, possibly an excuse to get rid of the dead wood.

At most, I anticipate a total of 200,000 redundancies dubaiwide...Maybe half of those find another job and the other half leave...100,000 people is about 10% of Dubai population, yet, the sentiment in the city is that of D Day approaching...
