Default Expat Contract Negotiations for Saudi Arabia

I’ve been in talks for a job in Saudi and I t’s getting serious.

It’s likely to be a 3 year offer for an executive director level position. It’s a full on expat package.

I’ve never negotiated for this type of situation, and I know the Middle East has its own nuances. Can anyone offer tips so might avoid pitfalls while also not leaving money on the table?

Do they still do incentive bonuses to keep people on till the end of contract? I am also particularly interested in protecting myself in case the project is halted.

Any insights would be most appreciated.

It may be worth clarifying what you mean by full-on expat package.

The meaning of that phrase appears to have changed, dependent on the industry, over the last few years..

OK, so its more the 'Glamping' package, rather than the full-blown feather bed...

To upgrade to that, then you require Housing, Car, Cost of Living, Education, Utilities, etc...

Trying to think if I have left anything on the table.....

Just go into it with eyes full open and get a specific figure on each element.
For example, we offer an Education Allowance - but this is only 20k SR for one child per year. Maximum of three children. Bear in mind that a full year at the British School in Riyadh is probably around 70k ( if not more ) a year for Y10/Y11 . Does the education allowance cover the full cost of school fees or is it a contribution towards?

Similarly with housing - a housing allowance here in Saudi is typically a percentage (25%) of your Basic Salary . Clarify the actual amount - allowance or actual housing provided. Western compounds can be eye wateringly expensive, so check which you're getting.

Bonuses - usually based on your basic salary and multiples thereof. Again, check in advance, might even be able to negotiate a fixed amount in advance. Is there is signing on fee? Paid for some sectors here in KSA, not all.
