Default Entry on (almost) expired passport

Hello

Mini-Millhouse's passport is near expiry - well, will be when he is due to re-enter the UAE in August. Will this be a problem? I'm guessing that it'll be OK as his residence visa is valid - but we're not 100% sure.

We are currently in the UK so in theory could get it renewed here - but trying to get Mrs Millhouse to actually do this while I'm away is like pushing water uphill so I'd rather do this in the Emirates if possible.

Any advice, piss takes, or smutty jokes gratefully appreciated.

Cheers, Millhouse

Not sure if Mini is a boy or girl but I'll gamble and say theirs instead.

Get an appointment at one of the passport offices and get it replaced within 4 hours. Dead easy - in fact I'm doing it for my boy next week.

it depends on which airline you are travelling on.... even though you have a valid visa they may still not let you travel. nearly expired by how many months? i had 4 months left on a passport before expiry without any problems from CGD but i would defo get a new one in uk, the way they do it now is silly, and the time it takes is silly better off paying for one in 4 hours if you are near a passport office.

dunno about UAE but Oman was not a problem, but the airline was. they wouldnt even let us book tickets into & out of country without 6 months left.
so we sent off for renewal in April and it took 6 weeks. and the passport with the visa in it took another week.

dear goodness, I'd go for a 4hr passport office trip in the UK anytime over that hassle.

Thanks - this is reassuring. The passport expires in November. He will return in August. Flying on Emirates - no issues when we left (although it was a single ticket out).

We looked at passport offices and the 4 hour jobbie - nearest one to us is London and we don't fancy spending the day there; we would rather the 6 week marathon from the UAE (as he probably won't be exiting the UAE again for a while) so it doesn't bother us.

I was quite impressed with the application process through Germany.

Last year my renewal of a 2nd passport took less than 3 weeks and even our daughter's first passport was all done in less than 6 weeks.

The process only seems to take the full 4-6 weeks if you apply during the main pre-summer-holiday period. Applications during autumn/winter often seem to be processed in 2 weeks or less.

IIRC, last year my wife flew to the UK and back on a passport with a lot less than 6 months left on it, but she was flying Emirates, which may have made the difference. A non-UAE-based airline might not have been clued-up about what a UAE residence visa is or looks like and refused travel assuming that she would have been denied entry on arrival (with the airline getting the hassle/fine).

Do it in the UK. It's much cheaper and if you renew it within less than 9 months validity remaining, that time will be tagged onto the new expiration date, so you don't lose out.

it really depends on when you send it in... i sent my 21st may and it came back last saturday so like nearly 5 weeks just for a normal renewal.... to be in this country without your major form of id if nothing else is really not on.

4 months on passport etihad but quite often its not just the airline that will refuse you it may well be the airport you are travelling from they do not recognise that you have a valid visa for this country so you would be let in.

you should be fine with that, but if i was in the uk and had the chance to renew there i would for one it will take less time, even if you send it away and it will cost way less.

I called Emirates in the UK, I'm told all will be fine.

Fingers crossed that the menopausal women on the Manchester airport check in desk paid attention during the training.
