Default Eid Al Isra' Wal Mi'raj

Hi,

Does anyone know if Thursday will be an official holiday?

Islamic days start at sunset (quite logical really - days end at sunset, ergo the next day starts at sunset) and I think this holiday starts at sunset on Thursday.

In practice this means no holiday since it's not like the UK where you get another day off if a bank holiday falls on a weekend. Also means no alcohol on Thursday evening.

Why is it more logical for the day to end at sunset instead of beginning with sunrise?

Perfectly logical also. Depends upon whether you focus on beginnings or endings. Both ways depend on being nearer to the equator for the start/end of the day to be more or less at the same time throughout the year.

It's Islam so you'll just get a headache looking for logic. Same for any religion.

Given everything is done by sightings of new moons, sunset kind of makes more sense...

Amen to that!

The lunar calender has been around for millenia and has nothing to do with Islam other that it was the calender in use at the time the and place koran was put together. Hardly a triumph of logic to use the most popular calender and method of reckoning days in the area you happen to live in...

If the koran mentions quantum mechanics, anti-biotics, the microchip, jet engine and evolution I'll eat my words happily though
