Default Egypt: Alexandria, apartment rentals etc

Hi All,

Im hoping someone can push me into the right direction. I am moving to Egypt for a year in September, as I am studying at the University there. The University have their own student accommodation, but am not too keen on that, since you have to share your bedroom with another student - which am not too keen on. I prefer something more private. Does anyone know where I can look for rentals in Alexandria? I am looking just for myself (female) and I don't mind flat sharing, as long as I can have my own bedroom and all female. Any ideas?

Also, if anyone has any insights to 'life' living in Alex, would be much appreciated I was there in April, just for a weekend visit from Cairo - love it, but whats it like living there and what is the possibility of getting work teaching English? Do I need a TEFL certificate?

Thanks

Since when? It's part of Africa and on other forums it's treated as part of Africa too, quite correctly.

Err...since a long time ago.

Wikipedia cites 3 "Middle Easts", the first being the "Traditional Definition" which includes Egypt.

Collins English Dictionary: 1. (Placename) (loosely) the area around the E Mediterranean, esp Israel and the Arab countries from Turkey to North Africa and eastwards to Iran

American Heritage Dictionary: An area comprising the countries of southwest Asia and northeast Africa.

"The definition of the term Middle East is not set in granite, as the region is not an exactly defined area of the world. It is sometimes referred to as the Near East or Southwest Asia; in India the region is known as Western Asia. What the area is called sometimes depends on one’s position on the globe. Even then, not everyone agrees on which countries should be included within a geographic domain.

The different terms applied to the region emphasize that the area being described owes its regional character to other than indigenous factors. As diverse as the countries of Europe, these lands are included in a single term only because they are “near to” or “in the middle of” other regions. Whatever unity does exist within the region today is largely functional: it is a unity in relation to the outside world rather than an inherent unity arising from similar geographical and social conditions or from a recent common history.

The issue is confused not only due to the region’s location but also due to culture and ethnicity. If the Middle East is defined solely as the Arab states and Israel, Iran would be excluded. If it is thought to include Israel and the predominantly Muslim states in the area, then the North African states of Algeria, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia, plus Afghanistan, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, the Sudan, and Turkey, would also have to be included.

In the academic community, the term Middle East refers to the Arab countries of North Africa; the Arab countries of Asia; Israel; and the non-Arab countries of Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey. According to some broader definitions, it may also include the five countries of Central Asia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Some might also include Azerbaijan.

That said, a commonly used definition focuses on those countries that Americans most often associate with the Middle East and that have had a continuing and central role in two issues of importance to US foreign policy: the Arab-Israeli conflict and the security of the Persian Gulf and its oil resources. These nations are Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Given the importance of the war on terrorism to current US foreign policy, it might be appropriate to include Afghanistan and other neighboring Central Asian states in the definition. The average American sees Afghanistan as a country in the Middle East.

In fairness - all western media refers to Egypt (and Libya for that matter) as the Middle East. Politically, if not physically, it is.

The confusion really boils down to Arab League countries.

I personally find the confusion that the Middle East only encompasses the GCC member countries more irritating - that really isn't true.

So nerrrrr....
If you're East of here, you tend to refer to this region as "Western Asia"...... I actually think the confusion comes from people not distinguishing properly between "Middle East" and "Arabian Gulf"........

Afghanistan is part South Asia and part Central Asia. Pakistan is always considered South Asian.

If one goes to the BBC website, Pakistan and Afghanistan are groups as South Asia. So I don't see how this lady can claim that in the academic community Afghanistan and Pakistan are considered as being in the Middle East. None of the archaeological material I read on Pakistan refer to it as being in the MidEast.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/

Egypt is considered MidEast due to cultural and ethnic links to Western Asia. How can this Prof. claim any of the 'Stans as being in the MidEast?
MidEast in general stretches from the Levant to Iran to the Arabian penninsula to Turkey + North Africa. But using a very narrow definition of the MidEast would exclude North Africa.

Hurray! Someone to the rescue! Well done Mariah.

I worked / resided for some time in Alex, about 17 years ago. One of my colleagues told me one day "My wife's in agony." On enquiring in a worried tone what was wrong with her, he said, "Not agony--Agami (the residential area to the west of Alex)". It wasn't particularly nice then, but hopefully its improved.

Don't be ANYWHERE near the tannery--the stench is numbing and extends for miles.

I'd love to go back to Alex. I was involved in the steel plant in Dikhela (?), and visited often. The palace and gardens to the east of the city were a favourite, as was the fish restaurant shaped like a castle.

Is the Cecil Hotel still going? I'm convinced I closed down its casino.
