Dubai news item: Could this have happened to a White European couple?

Dubai: A male and female visitor who had consensual sex following an 'unregistered marriage' have been jailed, ruled a court on Thursday.

not sure whether it could....but isn't the point that as muslims, the sex and alcohol were against all their religious laws as well, which wouldn't have been the case for a white european couple...

So do the criminal laws vary depending on which culture/religion you come from? Will a Muslim get his hand chopped off for shoplifting, while an atheist gets jail time?

Actually I do believe that is the case in Dubai.
Im sure I read that officially Sharia law/punishments do not apply to non-muslims in Dubai. That is not the case in the other Emirates.

This case sounds a lot different as the lady was apparently beaten so I suspect she informed the police and they had to prosecute....I could be wrong as the article doesn't really give much detail.
