From Dubai to Doha: What would I miss?
Looks like a role is shaping up. What am I gonna miss? Is it just the case of the shit sandwich having less bread / more filling?

If not...well, make sure the money is worth it.
But seriously, I have not lived in Dubai, so have no comparison...but I'd say Qatar is a bit more "provincial", a bit more backwards.
What would you miss? I don't know, what do you usually do in Dubai?

Doha is a halfway house between the extravagances of Dubai and the more "village" feel of Abu Dhabi.
Taxis are a pain to get, plenty of private cars though, usually Honda Accords. Roundabouts are fun!
Traffic during rush hours is a real pain, reckon on double the time usually needed.
Traffic lights stay on red too long.
World class sports infrastructure and getting better - I was at Aspire Zone the other day.
Happy hours are good value, if not a member they often want passport copy to get in though.
I've been reliably informed that hookers are double Dubai prices - not that I would know of course.
I like Doha.

Re: From Dubai to Doha: What would I miss?
Thanks so far. Yeah, was going to say what I usually do in Dubai in order for a comparision to make sense, but didn't want to reveal that I'm actually sadder in real life than I appear online
What does it for me in Dubai? Relative cleanliness and order (which is partly why I hate Saudi so much). Decent range of bars, from plush/romantic to raucous. Great range of eateries. Range of people to meet, on those rare occasions I'm bothered (I'm studying as well as working, alright). Er...that's about it. My wife n kids like Dubai when they come out, but mainly for the food and weather (and for the kids to go to Wild Wadi and such). I do the daily run between Marina and AD, so I guess Doha driving's just going to be a different flavour of shit.
I think the major change will/would be the size of the place--I was relatively happy in AD for 3 years, so I guess not so different.

Well there is a water park but it ain't wild wadi!
Order? erm, more Saudi than UAE. Plenty of restaurants esp in the (rebuilt) Souq.
Cleanliness, depends where you are West Bay is a lot cleaner than around airport area which is more Satwa than Marina.
It's what you make of it, as i said, I like it. Pity half the taxi drivers and private hire drivers haven't a clue where they're going as they've only been there 2 weeks...

I like the size of Doha compared to Dubai. It takes less time to get to places depending on where and when you want to go.
It should meet your criteria above, but less options, you get bored after a while of going to the same places all the time. but if you dont go out that often you'll find new things to do for quite a while.
Average night out now consists of an sms message discussion all day about where we should go and no-one really having any ideas other than all the places we usually go, so we end up in Paloma which is a good relaxed bar with decent live music. There are many other bars which are good i'm being a bit facecious.
People are nice - it's not that easy to meet people but when you do they're usually really friendly, I'm lovely for example. :-)
Alledgedly Doha tends to have more down to earth types of expat compared with the glitzy corporate Dubai types. Though having never really had any experience of Dubai i couldn't confirm this.
You should come over for a weekend. I'm sure a few of us could show you around the place.

I miss everything....
Qatar is shit , make sure the deals good and if you get to meet some good people you'll be ok .
If you compare the two you'll be woefully disappointed...It's like comparing a blow job from Rihanna to a wank from your Grandmother,

On a slightly different note, do apartment leases have a break clause, or are you tied for the entire year?

Sorry mate I never realised that your family wasn't here with you all the time. If that is the case then it hardly matters where you live, surely. You could always meet up with them in Dubai for the occasional holiday. My impression is that Qatar is not really family friendly but OK for a single guy.
