Dubai Construction Safety
I am sorry but I simply do not believe the statistics quoted here. Whenever I visit construction sites, yes there are plenty of warning notices on display and protective helmets worn but the practices of the mainly unsupervised workers are often terrifying. I have already mention a recent fatal plunge into a silo which has not been reported anywhere. Maybe I am just being unfair?

Every site noticeboard I've seen shows between 75 and 100 days lost to injury, generally relating to a tower that hasn't got beyond 5 floors yet.
The HSE figures for 2007-2008 show an average of 3.4 per 100,000 workers killed at work (construction only - national average 0.8/100,000) with a total of 72 fatal injuries.
HSE stats for construction in the UK
As for "proper training"... I would imagine it goes something like this "This is a "building site" - you will be working here. This is your "safety hat" - wear it. Here is a "hammer"..."

the sycophantic style of the article is a dead giveaway.

Re: Dubai Construction Safety
If you remember the absolute carnage depicted on the TV and in newspaper pictures soon after it happened, it makes only 4 dead seem unlikely.

200 odd car pile up in fog outside Ghantoot.
I was driving the other way (AD bound ) that morning. You couldnt see 10 metres in front, still the arseholes in Landcruisers and safari's were flying by at 140 plus.
On my journey i witnessed 2 landcruisers smash into the central reservaton
idiots

But that was a traffic accident and not a construction accident, no? I had visions of a building collapse or something.
