Don't use phone in the car!
From the National, also covered in GN:
The police have announced they will launch a traffic campaign that targets the risks of using mobile phones while driving.
"The penalty will only fall on a minority group who do not respond to the language of advice and guidance," said Brig Gen Hussein Al Harethi, the director of Abu Dhabi traffic police.
Traffic police and patrols will stop those who do not follow the rules and will fine them Dh1,000 based on Article 8 of the traffic law, which penalises those who drive in a way that imposes danger on the public. The fine will be accompanied by 12 black points and offenders' cars will be confiscated for 30 days. Article 135 penalises those who use hand-held phones while driving with a fine of Dh200 and four black points.
** end **
Follows on from the tragic death of Theyab Awana - it's a shame it takes a tragedy for this to happen but hopefully our roads will become a little safer for it.

Re: Don't use phone in the car!
can I just...
Yeah, right. There aren't enough police on the streets to fine everybody... although it would restore Dubai's finances something chronic. They just need to stand on the corner of the road by my building - I'd say about 70% of all drivers that come to my junction are on their phones, preferably whilst trying to swing round a rather blind corner using the palm of one hand to steer.
Honestly, lovely knee-jerk reaction... and completely laughable because its unenforceable (well, it would be, were people to actually care).

They'll enforce it like they enforce the recent law they passed about children having to travel in child seat restraints? I've seen absolutely no difference in the usual here in Abu Dhabi - the usual often being the parents putting on their seat belts, then letting the children have the run of the car!

interesting to see whether the enforcers stop doing it...i've yet to see a police car where the driver isn't on the phone...

I think they're serious about it this time- let's see!
Two very important people were amongst those present at that football player's funeral. And that IS a big deal.

It would be easier to reward those who are NOT on the phone. School drop off is often the worst... Kids out, phone at ear, drive off completely bloody distracted. My mate's kid almost got run over in the school car park as a car reversed back without the driver looking OR hearing loads of people screaming to stop. He was BANGING on the car, she was on the phone. Head had to note it in the school newsletter.
I actually refuse to use the phone when I'm driving - I've done too many items on this subject. I don't see what's so hard about pulling over and calling them back .
Once spent a terrifying hour on the way back from Abu dhabi with one of the bosses who spent the entire journey driving and bbm'ing. Apparently it was "important." ****ed me right off and I never got in a car with her again.
Have you all seen the YouTube footage of the man on the highway reading a newspaper? Is that still legal?

Re: Don't use phone in the car!
When you have some motorists who feel they are above the law, others who for all intents and purposes above the law and everyone else who has their own driving standard based on their country of origin it's easy to see why the UAE is constantly in the top 10 for per capita deaths on the road.
According to the WHO you're six times more likely to have a serious injury or death driving in the UAE than you are in Western Europe...
Fining people who earn USD10,000 + a month won't work, they can pay them and hire a car or jump in a cab. They should be dishing out jail time or flogging the bastards who endanger everyone else. Then again given the police rarely obey the traffic codes we can't expect too much can we?

Nothing has changed.
On my trip to AD this morning I saw many people on the wobbler while driving - all nationalities from taxi drivers to locals in these funny sergeant bill Mercedes 4x4 things.
I was shocked - to the point it distracted me from my BBMing.

Shocked me so much I phone Mum, Dad, Big Sister, next Big Sister, Sam at work and even told the guy at Costa when I was ordering my latte so it'd be ready for my arrival.
Truly shocking.
