Whats the best and most cost-effective of calling London from Doha. Specially if I have to deal with my bank (and wait until an operator picks up) ?

Definitely use the office phone for that. Especially if it is a 30 minute, "your call is important to us" job.

Joking apart - skype to a UK landline would probably be cheapest?

yeah, use skype but use a non-0870 number if you can.

Cant use office number, apparently they deduct it from salary. WEIRD!!! I use to call all over the world from London..... I never took advantage of it, but kind of took it for granted.

i used my qatar pay as you go phone to call barclaycard the other day and i ended up using the 0844 number - it actually wasn't horrendous probably about 3 quid in all for a pretty long phone call.

Stick 100 chips on your pay as you go local sim card and phone everyone you know over Eid and you'll still have change for a shwarma...

We pay £5.99 a month to vonage for their basic call plan. You can choose a local uk number. They provide you with a gadget which links into your internet and you attach a normal landline. That plan includes all your local and national calls peak and off peak, you just pay extra for mobile and premium rates like you would BT. Also means your friends and family call you as though you're in the uk. We've had no problems at all with it and most people we know here in saudi use it.
