I think principles are very much compromised here by what you have riding on keeping you job.Sometimes one has to bite the bullet rather than uprooting a family, interrupting kids' education and gambling on happy ever after elsewhere.
No-one says it's right but unfortunately that is the way of it here.
I wouldn't call anyone spineless for doing this. It's more difficult to go in to the office everyday,to put up and shut up when you are disaffected than to happily skip into Nirvana.

Most people get employed here because of skills, experience and knowledge of their specific field(some don't)
In the construction industry here these things are taken as a must for any senior ex-pat manager.
What you also need to have is a drive to get things done and to push projects to completion and to client handover and eventually payment.
We work through all the holidays, islamic and christian, certainly this has an effect on everybody and sometimes we all get p**sed off with it from time to time.
It goes with the territory on any project in any country but especially more here in the gulf.
Thats the real world im afraid, the minute you start quoting the labour law because you missed 'brunch at the fairmont' is the day you'll find yourself on the EK006 to LHR.

Anyone with professional pride would have this attribute-not exclusive to Construction.Ah yes, 'eventually payment', ain't that the deal?

I have a very small team out here which I manage remotely more often than not.It would be impossible to operate if I had to strictly observe Labour Law. I phone them at home, ask them to work at the last minute and on days off without compensation.I sometimes am late with expenses and rent cheques-simply becoz payments don't come in on time BUT I don't get complaints & I never have lost a valued employee to another company. Two way street, I don't need to see time sheets or expense receipts;I won't crack up if they need an extra couple days holiday etc.We are a very small potato though and yes if they want National holidays they get them.

Enfin,
Generally, to expect Labour Law and due process to operate fairly, I would expect at least a backdrop of democracy...........
Just my 2 fils.

This is the way to handle it. It an extended 'Hawthorne Expermiment' but without the cynicism. What pleases me is seeing that there are considerable numbers of managers and supervisors who can engage and inspire teams with no resort to rules or processes but by managing the worker carefully and considerately and seeing a benefit in the quality of the work.

Hospitality, mostly get off in lieu and take a long weekend or something as the holidays are busy periods for us.

I work for a semi government company. We get all government public holidays, sometimes more ie last year the company gave us around 14 days off over EID and National Day although it wasn't officially public holiday.

Our boss always tries to get us to come in during the public holiday periods. A few months ago lots of people did to try and win brownie points. Now, no one cares and flights are booked the minute the holidays are announced.

Although the schools are off Thursday, I don't think non-gov't employees will be getting Thursday off. May be wrong.

Yes that is basically what it is like around here, although we drink more coffee.

Actually, I'm only a 'semi-government' employee, so get the hoilday benefits of the government - the trade off is I also get the shitty benefits packages.

i work for a multinational headquarters in a free-zone. we do get all holidays as days in lieu.

a friend of mine works in a company where he works 6 days a week without any local holidays. but they give him some of the western world holidays instead.
