Discouraging Roaches
 

Hi everyone, I'd like some help if possible.

Any good tips/advice on discouraging roaches in my room? I recently moved into a shared apartment and its currrently pretty empty as my furniture has not arrived yet. I've cleaned the place thoroughly and so far been able to spot any new (few) intrusions of the creepy crawly kind and dispose of them quickly.

Problem is once I'm fully settled in here, there will be lots of places to hide, and as clean as I keep my room and bathroom... I can't vouch for the hygiene levels of the rest of the flat :unsure:

What can I do to keep them at bay? A few wandering in every so often is fine, I can deal with that, I just don't want them to start... ugh...BREEDING in my room or anything gross.

Get a pest control company in. most guarantee 6 months with no roaches

Ive noticed that. The roaches here are teeny in comaprison to the ones that used to break into my place in Houston..... But, then again, EVERYTHING in Texas is bigger!!!!

yup...we had them coming in through the drains, got pestcontrol and never got them back again, must be well over a year ago...

the roaches are not bad here, its the Cobras you have to watch out for!

we have beetles at home, equally disgusting and bats at night, freak show

Don't waste time spraying harmful chemicals...

Got to your local pharamacy and get a box of boric acid power (and try not to touch or eat it...not healthy!)

Mix one part of sugar or milk power to every nine parts boric acid power then sprinkle it behind fridges, under carpets and basically anywhere roaches hide.

Don't vacuum it for at least a week. Give the little buggers time to come and get the bait...you'll have few to no roaches in no time...of course you need to do the rest of the flat or at least behind the cooker and under the sink for best effect.

Boric Acid power basically destroys their mandibles so they can't eat or drink...they starve in about 5 days. It tends to stick to them so the'll bring it back to their nest which won't help any eggs that hatch later.

We use this stuff every 6 months and I haven't seen a roach in nearly a year. Best of all it costs about 10 dirhams for a small tin size container :)

Hehe, yeah thankfully these buggers are only small, and pretty easy to catch without squashing them.

So this Boric Acid stuff.....so I'm baiting them,then killing them? Thing is,I don't want to encourage theminto my room in the first place.... or I guess i'll tell my neighbours the plan and plant some of this stuff around throughout the shared areas then hopefully that'll help. Thing is, neighbours have small kids.I don't want to poison them! What a first impression,huh?

I have an ensuite bathroom....I dont want to encourage any up the drains towards my place...is it best to just keep the plugholes covered and leave the bathroom be?

You're not going to bring them in from a 10mile radius or anything - you're simply banking on the fact that there are nests somewhere nearby and they are having a wandering around your apartment looking for crumbs and bits they can have a munch on. By baiting them you'll keep them away from proper food in cupboards and eventually give them population decline problems. It's pretty much impossible to keep them away but they can be controlled.

Regarding the kids...you'll have to keep it away from them as it can be dangerous (but certainly not as toxic to the chemicals used in regular pest control substances - which can be fatal in concentrated doses!).

Put the powder in your bathroom too, back of the toilet out of sight to get any of the little buggers who might pop out the drains. They'll take it back to their nest and it will do it's job.
