You are correct, but I think he meant "Subject Access Request" under the Data Protection Act, which applies to any organization that holds your personal data - meaning anything that can be linked directly to you personally. In this case the airline has a name and other records, at least sufficient to match it to a passport when the passenger arrives at the airport, and in this case, apparently some derogatory information which means he wasn't allowed to board the aircraft.

That said, I suspect that the information the airline actually has is only that the destination country has said that he won't be admitted into the country.

If personal information is known to the corporation that is operating in the UK, no matter where the information originated or is stored, the corporation is obligation to make it available under a SDR by the person to whim the data relates. ….. Otherwise you'd find that large corporations would all be operating their data centers in remote countries without data access laws. Also bear in mind that the banks and other companies have sent their operations to India haven't circumvented the UK DPA.

That said, as I said previously, I suspect that the only information the airline knows is that the ticket-holder wasn't going to be allowed in to the UAE.
