A guy who works for me is late 50s, severe diabetes and got a positive test. He shrugged it off and asked when he could come back to work. It seems that its a lottery on how it affects different people.

Yeah, I reckon the number of people like that is higher than we know / think. The asymptomatic cases are going to be high I hope....but if you and I can shrug it off and by the time we realise have infected an average of a couple of people a day, then we might well have infected a few hundred without realising through the chain and of them, there's a few deaths and a good number of hospitalised cases.
If I'm getting it and lucky enough to not be affected too much, I'll be staying home and locked away for as long as needed to not pass it on.

He might not be in trouble - cannot rule out an over cautious ICU admission. He was given oxygen but in amounts far below the normal ICU admission criteria.
