My view is that the cost of living is relative. Firstly it depends where you are moving from. From the UK it is still quite cheap, from India it is quite expensive. Also it depends what "paid for" benefits you receive for example housing with uttilities paid will decrease your budget significantly.
You can try www.xpatulator.com to do a calculation of your current salary in your current location and it will calculate what you need to earn in the UAE.

3 bed appartment in town: 225,000 AED per year (to rent)

Average cost of meal in working man's cafe: 10 AED per person
Macy Dee : 20 AED
Posh Resturant: 80 AED per person

Petrol: 6.95 AED per gallon (4.5 L)

visit to super market per person 150 -200 AED per week if you buy local products (GCC)

packet of cigs 6AED

Honda Civic new 54000 AED

Insurance 5% of of 54000AED = 7714 AED
