Complicated expat tax question
Trying to make sense of the new rules but challenged....
Tax years 2008 - 2012 clearly non UK resident, easily less than 30 days per year in UK.
Tax year 2012-13 spent 145 days in UK, but none working/earning (I think this is irrelevant anyway??).
Tax year 2013-14 currently 74 days spent in UK.
Does this mean I have only 14 more days or up to the 183 limit before liable for UK tax on 2013-14 earnings.
I have (currently) full time residence in UAE, no home in UK. Divorced (in process at least) ex wife and kids in UK (do these count as ties??)
From what I understand under the transitional rules I'm clear since I averaged less than 90 days in previous 3 tax years and was in full time UAE employment. Therefore as long as less than 183 days no UK tax to pay.
Reason for question: would like to see kids more often but burned up time arguing about divorce.
PS. Now need a new job too as that's gone titsup also, though I don't suppose that makes any difference to the jolly folk at HMRC either.
