Default Companies cut Housing Allowance

Companies in Dubai are cutting accommodation allowances and even preferring single employees to married ones as they try to contain costs.

Middle-ranking management employees, who were accustomed to being offered up to Dh190,000 (US$51,700) a year for living expenses, are now being offered Dh100,000 or less.

Employers also are reported to have cut the accommodation budgets of employees by an average of 60 per cent, leading to “unpleasant incidents” with landlords unwilling to give back deposits .

Surely, employers can't cut an employee's allowance (as reported) half way through a lease contract signed when rents were high

I just get a flat salary, no housing nowt - so I get a bank loan each year. So this wouldn't affect me, luckily.

When I was made redundant in December, I contacted all my contacts in various agencies in the UK, and also agencies in Dubai.

At that time, none of the big Contractors were employing, and those that were recruiting, were in the M&E field. Salary on offer, for an Expat Senior Q.S. circa AED20-25k per month, NO accom allowance, NO car allowance etc.

No chance!

Dubai employers not respecting the terms of contracts or rule of law - who would have thought!

I think we have gone from the "it wont be bad here" phase to the "omg its terrible here, but it wont happen to me" phase.

The bad news - if you are in the UAE and within reach of arab screwing over you will be affected.

Its a no brainer - if they treat expats that shabbily in the good times god help you in the bad times!

Sounds like a more severe bout of wage deflation we are getting in the west. Combine that with unemployment and dead consumer spending will be the start of the next phase of the crisis.

The govt needs to get some advice from someone like roubini and take some action before the economy gets alot worse.
