Default Can someone give me an idiots guides to IPODs?

My dalliance with music technology ended when the CD was introduced. But as I am sorting out all my crap pending a move out of the UAE, I am once again looking at a big stack of CDs to move (not only taking up space but also weight in my case).
I have enough air miles with Etihad to get an 8,16 or 120 odd GB IPOD but no idea what I should get.
Also should I bother with an IPOD at all and instead get another brand
How do I get my CD's onto the little thing?
Was also chatting with a colleague who has allegedly 18,000 tracks on his computer however when I said, "well can I just plug my etihad IPOD into your PC and download them" he got all anal like I had just asked to service his wife!
Is this the norm with IPODers?

Help for the technologically challenged please

Just download iTunes (free), install it on your PC.

Put CD into your PC, it will copy songs into iTunes library (if enough disk space on PC).

Plug iPod into PC, it will be detected then add whatever songs you want on the iPod (see above re disk space).

But when I play tunes on You Tube, the sound quality is crap and often the track pauses or jumps. Obviously down to a poor internet connection but isn't that the norm here? I would prefer to listen to DVDs myself.

Provided yer motor has an Ipod connection, Ipod is the way to go. I've a 60GB and haven't been able to fill it yet and I have loooooads of albums on there. Easy to convert, but you do need to convert. Many, many docking sations you can use for Ipod that make it central to your music listening needs.

Even TV's have Ipod docking now!

just a final question
have read that there are sites that you can download music for free off the net but looking at itunes, nothing appears to be free SO
do you find dodgy site that you can download the music to your PC for free
then
download some white mans magic that converts your freebie to an IPOD acceptable format
then
transfer it to your IPOD
or
is my ignorance of technology showing no boundaries????

where is my 12 year old son when I need him

iPods and every other music player known to man play files in "mp3" format.

That's 90% likely what the dodgy sites will offer you.

I have an ancient 15Gb iPod I hardly use any more. My music travels with me on my netbook (which has better battery life than the iPod does) and I have some albums on my phone for gym etc.

Download music from wherever then drag and drop into Itunes to convert. Simple, really.

Yeah, just to add my two penneth worth, as typical points out, most tracks you download are in MP3 format, which will be no problem to transfer to your iPod. I have a 30gb iPod ( video ) and it houses my entire music collection,so I can take it where ever I go.

I am quite a fan of Apple and their products, but have been disappointed with some of the build quality. My iPod is currently suffering from missing pixels in the screen, quite a common problem by all accounts, no other option but to replace the screen. Headphones are not that great either, they tend to break after a year or so.

So -it MIGHT be prudent to look at other brands, but in my experience, the iPod wins hands down in terms of style, design and of course -status

My car currently has an input for any auxiliary device, so can connect the iPod to the car stereo and have all the music at my fingertips. One quick and easy way of car connections, is to buy an FM transmitter.

THis simply plugs into the headphone socket of the iPod, and it sends an FM signal to your car stereo ( or any other stereo in fact ) , tune in your car stereo to the same frequency as the transmitter, then hey presto ! all iPod music played through the car. Can be picked at supermarkets /electrical stores quite cheaply.

In terms of iPod / other mp3 player - go for the biggest capacity you can get.

Hi I use a web site called ARES to download my music / videos etc.
This is a free site. However there is a pay to use site as well do not get them mixed up.

They are a other few web sites around i am sure many other members will advise.
I then use I tunes to place my music back i have over 85 gb of music.

But need some music in the car now i am in riyadh and no english radio stations, and i'm sick of usng tapes / cd's.
so yes it would be nice to plug and play so to speak.
