Default Can girlfriend and I get married by Sharia Law?

Hi

My girlfriend and I are hoping to move to Middle East (not decided upon country yet) within the next 12 months. We are both from the UK, unmarried and white and i have just found out that we can not/should not live together if we are not married. My girlfriend is very nervous about 'just winging it' but we had heard that you can get married by Sharia Law once we are out there and it makes it all legal. We would both be getting seperate visas etc anyway (she is a nurse, i am in corporate finance).

Can anyone expand on whether this is possible or not??

Thanks

Ill ditto Grace...

Within the UAE, even in the same Emirate, some have managed and some haven't... So, its not as if pinning down your decision to one country is gonna help in any way give you a definitive yes or no answer...

Just marry her, problem solved... If you think thats too big a step, Id be reconsidering emigrating anywhere together....

Nope, you have to have a problem first, then have a solution...

The former is where marriage comes in....

Interesting...usually by sharia law the woman should not be present and her "father/ brother" should sign on her behalf....so dont see how you will do this without lying.

If you're both getting visa why do you need to get married? You can still live together just dont shout about it!

By the sounds of things you have 12 months to get married in the Uk why complicate matters doing the deed here or are you hoping Sharia law doesnt apply to the uk when you get divorced

So much air so many words......it's an institution and those who contemplate it belong in one. Me, 47 seconds ago.

Me and the OH see marriage as irrelevant generally and somewhat unimportant. It's why we'll get married when she gets here, no big deal - makes no difference (obviously has legal ramifications) and we will both sign pre-nuptial.

If you don't mind me asking...
Why are you doing it then?
By signing a prenupt-you are dispensing with most of the usual legal ramifications. Are you doing it to negotiate bureaucracy and medical insurance easier?
Why are you doing it in UAE as opposed to your homeland?

Primarily she doesn't work (no need to) and is from a country that doesn't get auto visit visa. So its purely for convenience and UAE legal reasons. Getting married here so my family don't make a thing of it.
