Buying a camera/electronics--which part of town?
I've only been here a couple of weeks, and am in need of a digital camera. Is there a place recommended for such a purchase? Is there a part of town that concentrates on electronics? any help appreciated.
cheers!

there are plenty of electronic shops in Mall of the Emirates and city centre malls, including large electronic sections in teh Carrefour supermarkets.
Otherwise check out the large Sharaf electronic shop in Times Square Mall on SZR.

my friend got a good deal in the small electronics shop in MoE just near to hallmark (by the exit door)...she said she needed to go and call her partner to check against the price in the uk, and they automatically dropped the price by shedloads...
sharaf dg in times square seems pretty competitive too...

Looking at SLR's myself at the moment. There are specific stores that are the representatives for certain brands in the UAE. Therefore if you have a specific need for SLR it may be worth talking to them. Compacts are relatively freely available I think.

Personally I have been disappointed with the prices out here. If I look at several stores in Abu Dhabi and the prices I have seen in the press for Dubai, the prices are almost the same to the exact Dhiram with every shop matching each other and the prices fixed the same for months. The shop prices are often more expensive than the better UK prices.
In the UK I would probably buy online from Amazon, Dixons, etc. who often have good internet prices and promotions particularly on SLR's which have been dropping in price, particularly amateur entry-level SLR's. Here in UAE the prices have been a bit more expensive but you do tend to get a case and memory card thrown in and of course if you live here your warranty is here.
Further to the other thread on digital photography... If you are looking for entry level SLR's presently there are some reasonable prices on the Canon 400D, Nikon D40 and D40x all being superceded by new models. All have their bonus points and faults, mostly it's the 'cheap' lenses that come with these budget models that let them down. All will knock images from any compact for six if they are used right. If you are looking for a step up then buying a Nikon D80 will form the basis of a kit system that could last years. See online reviews for more details.
