Default On the buses in AD

I am pleased to report, I saw a public bus today on Salem street (no5 - AD mall to Marina mall). This article refers:

http://archive.gulfnews.com/nation/T.../10223758.html

Given the increase in construction and decrease in parking downtown, I may well find myself using it if/when they introduce a service along SZ1st/electra.

Good thing, too - can't come soon enough. I use the RTA bus in Dubai to get from Umm Seq to Madinat Jumeirah - far easier than trying to grapple with the taxi booking system....

Let's here it for buses, yeah......

that sounds brilliant... actually seems to cater to 'shoppers' rather than only mall workers. The Dubai buses that claim to go to Deira CC, for example, don't stop anywhere near the shoppers' entrance, but only at the staff entrances. Even on Beach Rd, the nearest stop to Marine Resort is a walk away from the entrance. There's no pretence at getting those onto the bus who can afford not to.

My car was in for service for about a week and I thought I would just get taxi's everywhere...except when waiting for 35mins in the midday sun on Salam street trying hail one down proved to be a feat in inself. Getting a cab a cab for my next meeting and at one point having to walk three blocks in this heat helped me realise that taxis were something one gets outside of malls and hotels with any degree of reliability.

Bring on the buses...when I was in London I didn't need or dream of owning a car and hope one day the authorities here will wise up and sort this issue out. I hope they have trains planned for AD too...

lol I just saw one from my balcony, cool! Would be hilarious if they did a night bus all we need then is a kebab shop!

Indeed - but you know my record of catching cabs... they are getting ever more scarce. And the buses are free until the end of the year!!! thats 10DHS a day, 50DHs a week, 200DHS a month....just about enough for a Friday brunch

I am pleased to see the buses - but I wish they would announce the timetables/routes/frequency somewhere!

OK - wonder if the locals will use them.........

and Norm - they do have trains planned - but not for a wee while. check out the Plan Abu Dhabi 2030

niddy is on a distinguished road
Smile Re: On the buses in AD

Here is an interactive map for thr 5 routes. They should be adding more routes in august and it is free for the next few months. If this service ends up going everywhere I'll definitely have to start using it when I am back in AD.

2030? Well I won't hang around till then just to get a train (I have experience waiting for trains in the UK but even BR were never that bad!).

By then everything here will be taxed up like the UK and everywhere else...they are slowly beginning to realise some smart arse in the West is going to come up with a practical and workable replacement for most fossil fuels soon and mess up the economies of many countries in this region...but by then I will be in my nice new cosy house somewhere in northern europe drinking myself senseless and complaining my grandchildren don't visit me enough
