Burj Dubai facing 9-month delay

by Tamara Walid and Dylan Bowman on Monday, 09 June 2008

The Burj Dubai will now not be finished until August or September 2009, Alabbar has said. The Burj Dubai is facing up to a nine month delay and is unlikely to be finished until August or September next year, Emaar Chairman Mohammed Alabbar revealed on Monday.

Alabbar told reporters in Dubai that the world's tallest building may not be completed until "August or September 2009".

6.2 acres of parkland and a 30 acre lake my ass! By the time of completion it will be more like 1.2 acres of parkland and an ornamental goldfish pond.

I like the way they put the blame squarely on the striking labourers.

I wouldn't be surprised as it isn't even close to being weather-proof so they can presumably only then start the internal work...on 160 floors?!

Oh and opening the Dubai Mall in September is also looking like a struggle seeing as half the roof is missing?

Let's be honest here, it's going to end up being a one-year delay. Makes sense really, a completion date of (say) New Year's Eve 2009 allows them to make more of an event of it.

If they piss about for too long then they'll be beaten across the line by the Kuwaiti Burj Mubarak Al Kabir (projected completion 2011, projected height 1001m).

Burj Dubai will likely only hold the record for 2 or 3 years....

It's getting silly now. I found a link to some other tower they're thinking about building - The Al Jaber tower, which will be 1800m high.

Isn't this one of the many Qur'anic indicators for the start of the end of the world?
