British TV in Riyadh

Hello

We will soon be moving to Riyadh and I want my wife to feel at home. Does anyone know if we will be able to get the likes of Coronation street and Eastenders please. I know that you can get Orbit in other UAE contries.

Many thanks

Welcome to the Board.

Most compounds will provide a range of free tv stations, which invariably include BBC Entertainment. So EastEnders will be on, but will be quite out of date. Some of the Orbit / OSN network show tv soaps ( Emmerdale ) but again, maybe not quite current.

You can of course pay for satellite tv, which will give you a wider range of channels.

Another option is to watch tv online via your internet connection. You will be able to access BBC iPlayer if you get a UK based VPN connection, but this will give you access to much more current programmes.

Hi

Many thanks for the response. I thought that the VPN things would have been stopped due to the tighter internet controls?

I would love to watch channel 4 news bulletin with Jon Snow, but that is not possible as I see.

What I only know is that Abu Dhabi Sport channel broadcasts the english premier league 2010, 2011 and 2012. While Al-Jazeera Sport channel broadcasts the champions league and some matches of the Championship. ( both channels provide English commentaries as well as Arabic)

but that most likely will not fascinate your wife to since it only deals with Football matches :(

Join a good torrent site and download what you want to watch on a daily basis, I have been doing that for some time as I find OSN an absolute load of rubbish

I know what you mean - my wife was very keen for me to find out whether she could get the soaps out here, before agreeing to come over. Some would say that's a little sad, but I would disagree - as you say, she wants to try to feel at home a little.

OSN (Orbit Showtime Network) does indeed show EastEnders (on BBC Entertainment) and Coronation Street and Emmerdale (on Show Series) and surprisingly they are pretty up-to-date, only a few weeks different to those currently being shown in the UK.

As stated you could subscribe to a VPN to stream or download through the BBC iplayer or ITV/C4 but in order to stream you will need a fairly fast internet connection in the first place which will more than likely be slowed when using the VPN. In the UAE most VPN providers are blocked (although not all) so if you're not in Riyadh yet, it may be worth subscribing to one before you get there, as once you're subscribed you'll be able to use it (assuming the websites will be blocked there as well?).

We use a mixture of the two, our internet connection has recently improved so we can stream TV now through the VPN and iplayer etc - particularly enjoying 'I'm a Celebrity - get me out of here'!

And if anyone knows which VPN sites are not currently blocked, please don't publish them here, as they will suddenly become so!

All points are valid ! but overall where are you going to be residing!! this is the main inquiry as what I pointed out in my previous post! your accommodation should be supplied with all necessary entertaiment kits .. not for free you ll have to pay your share for such service !

Showtime does broadcast an abundant array of various american and british channels ..

If the original poster is from Manchester, I think we have a new Derren Brown in the Bored as how on earth he could have deduced the home town from what had been posted I do not know.

And for those of you that don't know, Derren Brown is a mind-reader/illusionist type - very, very clever/scary.

Nothing harsh in my comment or obsessive-compulsive so have no idea what you're on about.

I can assure you that I am very calmed [sic] and restrained.
