The BEST things about Dubai, 2012 Edition
As a response to the "tell me why Dubai is shite so I won't go there" question I'd be interested to know what the current occupants view of the place is. Consider this a non-Dubai bashing thread...
What are the very best things about living in Dubai...?

Come on, there is loads...
1. The young and (generally) good looking population.
2. Racing cars in the desert at the weekends for no purpose whatsoever.
3. Decent steaks.
4. Decent cheap Curries.
5. Never doing the washing up.
6. Comedy on every corner. There is not a day in this place where I do not see something funny.

Fabulous Indian food that is ridiculously cheap
Being able to spend evening outside for 70% of the year
Sunshine (today excepted!)
Cheap petrol
Easy journeys to numerous other places
My many good friends
Opportunities to do other things rather then being pigeon-holed as in the UK
No personal income tax (top of most people's lists surely?)

Indian food that neither costs a lot nor gives you the trots.. it's a perfect compromise.
Cheap housing (never thought I'd say this)
Great weather for most of the year
Sunsets
The fact you can go to a hotel bar and almost forget you are in a hotel

1. The beaches, especially my favourite little cove in jumeirah.
2. The close proximity to mountains and desert.
3. Ability to get to Musandam in a couple of hours - utter bliss.
4. High ceilings (I'm home now and WTF? Who decided being able to touch the ceiling was a good idea?)
5. Making friends with amazing people from all over the world.
6. Mental skyline. I do quite miss all the mad buildings.
I would have seconded the cheap curries but I've just spent five weeks in India... Mmmmmmm. Dosas for 3dhs, Pani Puri for 1dhs and the most incredible unlimited non veg Royal Thali for 12dhs. The latter was one of the best meals I've ever eaten.

No tax
Low crime rate
Low cost of living
Good travel opportunities in the region
Cheap available taxis and metro
Good cheap services like laundry, cleaning and takeaway
Dubai is entering a recovery phase
As long as I have employment, I'll stick around

Oh yeah - being so "far away" is a built-in and accepted excuse to skip any social obligation I like!

You won't come and see us we won't visit you either, unless it's for a very special birthday or other occasion.
Summer: many of the JJs and their screaming kids disappear, the roads are quieter (except during Ramadan) and it is still possible to have fun with other like minded friends. The chilled pool becomes a great place for rehydrating with grape or grain/hop beverages!
Tax free
Cheap petrol (have you seen the price/liter in the UK since the budget?) and grape/grain/ hop if you're prepared to travel to RAK
For smokers, cheap tobacco products - GBP7.50 for 20 now cf 75dhs for 200

If you can secure work in Dubai now you're very lucky . It's the best it has been in my opinion for a long long time .
Great travel hub
Good social life
Excellent living environment
Value for money
There was a time not so long ago where you'd never believe you could associate all the above 4 points with Dubai .
