I'd highly recommend TransferWise. I recently used them to transfer a large amount of cash to the UAE from the UK and it all went very smoothly. They charged around 1.5% of the fee.

So give us an example,. If transferring £5000 how much do you save by using a currency exchange ? Is the game worth the candle ?

My experience (not involving QAR) is 3%-5%, but I'd do it for a ¼%. I wouldn't give the banks a penny more than I needed to!
