Bahrain orders crackdown on bars, discos
Manama: Bahrain's culture and information minister has
ordered one and two-star hotels to close down their bars and discos. Shaikha Mai Bint Mohammad Al Khalifa also asked the hotels not to sell liquor and to ban female singers from performing in their halls and restaurants. Tourism sources told Gulf News that the ban affects around 33 two-star hotels, six one-star hotels and six unclassified hotels. The ban, effective starting on Friday, could be extended to three and four-star hotels. The move by the minister who has been in charge of tourism in Bahrain since she was given the portfolio in September, immediately waded into controversy amid vociferous praise from people who have been calling for "clean" tourism and staunch resistance from hoteliers.
