Really, why would they do this? It seems a bit of a backwards step to me.

Bahrain have got the Grand prix and clearly want to try and make themselves a little more appealing to the West.....this just seems backwards to me.

I may be wrong on this, but I think Gulf Air is now dry as well?............errr just read the article. Perhaps it is not yet, I haven't flown them for a while as direct flights are just as cheap.

Same group eventually want a total alcohol ban in Bahrain...that will do wonders for their tourism.

Latest is that ALL the MPs have voted to ban ALL alcohol and ALL pork products, not just duty free!
Just in time for the F1 in April!
Expats here seem sure it will not happen but the writing is on the wall as they are introducing more and more restrictions.

"Former MP Abdul-Nabi Suleiman thought it was unlikely that the government would consider the proposal, but downplayed the negative economic a ban could have since "the economy is basically dependent on oil."
Technically he is right - the income comes from the Saudis who come over at weekends to take advantage of the booze and 'business women'.

They were meant to ban all 3 star hotels selling booze last year, but as far as I am aware it never happened.

Pity all the silly sods who have bought property in Bahrain at Riffa Views and Durat etc.

Re: Bahrain to ban Duty Free booze??
that doesn't motivate everyone in this world for investing property though. This isn't the first time we have heard mutterings about Bahrain and the alcohol ban. I would imagine the hotels will fight hard to ensure this isn't enforced.

no..but it still would be a bit of a bugger for most people if they had bought a house and found out later they won't be able to have a drink at home...or a bacon sandwich...
