Smile Bahrain - any advice?

I will shortly be relocating to Bahrain with my wife. Does anyone have any advice about living in Bahrain? We are intending to rent an apartment. are there any areas to avoid? What about buying cars 2nd hand? Is there a music scene of any kind?

There is a music scene, not particularly good, but it exists. Do you like thrash metal?

One of the finer musical offerings the kingdom has to offer...unless, like me, you prefer death metal of course.

These guys are just full of awesome.

Part of the purpose of a forum such as this is to ask questions so that you can find out more .
So rather than just telling people that they don't know anything it might be more helpful and polite to tell them something useful about what they wanted to know .
1) apartments - presumably they exist in Bahrain
2) 2nd hand cars - ditto
3) music scene - my mate from school runs a club there so ditto too !

Ok, so let's be serious.

When I lived there I stayed in Mahooz and Adliya as these were close to Brit Club and restaurants. Also malls were not too far.

Amwaj is the only place I can recommend today. It is on Muharraq island which is mostly Sunni, well protected and quiet. Amwaj itself has one access road which can be defended easily with a couple of barricades and two well placed machine gun nests. This is why this is the only place going up in price in Bahrain I understand. The only downside is that it will take some commute to get to work and malls and there not much there. It is still work in progress.

In terms of 2ndhand cars, trust no one except expats who come with a recommendation of someone you know. 2nd hand dealers are crooks, even the major dealers are crooks. You might end up buying a patched up wreck even from the likes of BMW dealer. Check adverts in the British Club and Dilmun Club. Inquire around. Rent until you find something reliable. Stay away from anything older than 5 years as the climate takes toll on the engine and piping which you won't see.

Of course there are those thatvwill say that a an IED on the bridge and a policeman being killed by disloyals is nothing to be concerned about.

If you must go, live on amwaj, buy a rangevrover from my mate at the unofficial land rover garage al fairs

Tbf, the OP asked a rather rubbish and open ended question.

If they'd come back with a budget, what kind of area they'd be working in, what kind of pad they're looking for...probably get loads more helpful advice.

As it is, it's to open ended that any info could well be moot if it's in the other end of the country or well out of budget...

There is also a search function darling and as these questions get asked AND answered on a regular basis sometimes you do want them to do a little bit of research ..just type in "living in Bahrain" and lots of useful info is listed

Bahrain is tiny , about 30 miles by 10 . So asking what areas to avoid ( if any ) wasn't that open ended really , especially with the political situation at the moment .

The OP also said he was moving with his wife , no mention of any kids , so you would presume that he would be looking for a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment .

As for the cars and the music , he was probably just looking for some general advice as in ; I bought my car here and it still goes , or if you want a good night out go to such and such a bar . As I said , Bahrain is tiny so there aren't going to be that many options.

The problem with old threads though is exactly that . They are old and sometimes the information might be out of date . Maybe the OP did use the search function and he couldn't find the information he was looking for .

People making facetious comments probably didn't help .
