I've been here 3 weeks. Living at the Intercon for the moment. Very hot so can't go out walking and exploring. Make sure you have your International Driving Permit before you come as you can't drive without it. We have felt a bit isolated as have not been able to drive yet so have not been able to get out and about as much as we would like but Al Ain looks like an interesting place.

hiya Larnie, we are coming up for the weekend this week, thursday and friday at the Hilton. If you fancy a change of scenery pop over. We are pool people though so will be at the pool all day

There are a lot of expats living there based in the polytechnic- quite a few friends of ours have gone there from Hong Kong. Not sure where they go to get their kicks though.

No I'm not working. I don't suppose anyone has any advice on healthcare here? I've been feeling unwell for about a week now. Nausea, diarrhea, vomitting, fatigue think I should see a Doctor but not sure who, how etc?

Thanks in advance

Sorry to hear you're not feeling well - hope you're drinking a lot of electrolytes to replace what you're losing.

I have no information on the relative merits of different medical centres in Al Ain, but here are a few phone numbers:

New Al Ain Medical Centre 03 764 1448
Family Medical Clinic 03 776 9902
Al Dhahery Clinic 03 765 6882

If you have medical insurance, then they may have pre-existing arrangements with certain clinics. You do not have to register with a clinic before visiting, but you do need to take your health card. You will be expected to pay the bill, and claim back from your insurance later.

I wouldn't be surprised if you are dehydrated. It's not unusual when people first come out to the ME, especially in the current heat & humidity.

Try to stay indoors and drink LOTS of fluids. I recommend Pocari Sweat. Yes, the name is horrid, but it will replace the electrolytes (essential salts & sugars) that you have lost. It isn't fizzy & has a mild lemon/grapefruit flavour. You should be able to find it in any supermarket.

Hope you feel better soon.

Ditto on the Pocari sweat (i think it's a japanese brand???) - always take a few cans if i'm going to the desert.

Wow do you really think it could be just dehydration? It comes in waves. I think I' feeling good then all of a sudden I feel like shit agian. My stomach cramps up and I feel so tired all the time. I was thinking Giardia or something like that. There is a Doctor in the hotel so they are going to ring me when he arrives. Thanks for the advice thought.
