Abu Dhabi: Why is everyone driving faster than me?

Abu Dhabi: Why is everyone driving faster than me?
First week in AD, I'm driving about at the speed limit and people are racing past me, even on Corniche etc which has those average speed cameras all the way along. Do they just not give a damn about fines or am I missing something?

You're missing the limit above which the camera goes off. In Dubai 20 Kph above the limit (normally). Unless you are the VERY important person to whom limits do not apply. I.E. you have sufficient wasta to have the 'offence' expunged from the records.

If you come over from KSA where the flash goes off 10kph over you have to adjust consciously. But still, there's those psycho SUV drivers trying to ram you off the road even when you're doing 140kph.

And those cameras aren't average cameras. Or are they?

In Oman, the people speeding are normally those driving their relatives cars.

Basically, yes.
I sold my convertible to a lady who already had 6 cars because her sons and daughters borrow them (to reduce the insurance costs). She laughed when I had a 10 OMR fine, as she said she regularly would get 200-500 OMR each year she renewed the mulkiah.

In the tunnels though there's one point the speed drops from 80 to 60kph with little warning and the overhead electronic number signs are completed useless since the ring around the numbers is too small, thereby obscuring clear reading of the numbers. I've been flashed twice in one location because of that.

Thanks all. Will bear all this in mind some of the speed limits in tunnels (60kph in an empty tunnel) are maddening, crawling slowly through a 4 lane tunnel on your own!

If you drive at a safe and sensible speed then everybody will drive faster than you regardless of the speed limits.

And why do young Toyota Yaris owners in KSA feel 200kph is the appropriate way to get from city to city?
My greenie friends are 'debating' the looming excessive wattage kettle ban right now whilst too many over here have 5.7l SUV's and secretly thinking of the 6.2l models.
