Default Abu Dhabi - what to take?

Hi, will be moving to AD very soon. I read though the threads that everything is available out there, but:

1- What items do I definitely need to take with me from here that may be overpriced, unavailable or just worth taking to AD?
2- We won't take any appliances or furniture from here as we plan to furnish from AD using the joining allowance. Good idea? If yes, what stores in AD do you recommend?
3- What do you do for transportation from day 1 (rent a car, rely on taxis...)? We're planning to buy a car but I prefer to wait until the end of my 3 month probation...

Thx in advance

Car: may depend on location of your office and distance from where you'll be staying. Go for taxis initially (they're cheap and generally plentiful) then decide if you want to hire.
Stuff: Pretty much everything available here. You could even leave your wife behind and hire one for a month or two if you wanted.

Yeah shoes are a bit of a problem. They don't have the range of sizes. Also if you're into any sport in particular, make sure you have supplies. I've found "sports" shops to be more like fashion accessory shops when it comes to the staff knowing about the product.

If prices in AD is as expensive & ridiculous as Doha then you need to bring with you some gravey mix :-)
Rent a car for the 1st 3 month
Electrical appliances are not of good quality so it will be best if you bring your existing ones

Don't just waste your furniture allowance on IKEA. Use some of it to buy some nie expensive stuff that you will keep. There are some better shops in Dubai, which is only 1.5 hours drive away.

Take the time to do a recce as i bitterly regret some of my furniture choices and certainly won't be keeping them.
