Re: 23 year old moving to Abu Dhabi
The nightlife in Abu Dhabi is relatively quiet with lots of '40 something guys' having a few beers and chat.
If you like Sport then there are a few bars showing football, Rugby & F1 at the 'real' weekend.
Dubai is more suited to a 23 year old (Barasti was mentioned). The options to get to Dubai (over 100km) are by Taxi (expensive) or by bus (full of smelly Indians).
Note that alcohol is only served in 5 star hotels so the prices are not cheap (5/6 quid a pint)

Aim to try and live near Raha Beach. There are bars on Yas Island and the Marina has a few new interesting openings soon including Iris (Beirut), Diablito, Cafe D'Alsace and also a new super cub will be opening on Yas towards the end of the year.

i agree nothing wrong with it. and its not really out in the middle of nowhere, i remember going to an office in the sand pit just behind the old mafraq hotel, and if you looked down into kcb and beyond there was absolutely nothing there just sand.... its very built up now. opposite the hotel on other side of motorway new british school being built, then go along into baniyas a little bit there is another british school being built alongside the new mall, which is opening more stuff there, sun and sand is open there now. cinema and lots more.

Still, some people like that, some don't.
