Default 2008 Rent Cap

The new rent cap for Dubai seems pretty reasonable as reported on the Gulf News wbsite.

Certainly better than the other option of market value increases, how they were going to enforce that I have no idea....

Another busy year for the rent committee then. If there was no increase last year and only 5% this year that averages at 2.5% over the 2 years. With inflation in Dubai well into double digits I can't see too many landlords rolling over and taking that. At least they have announced it (just) before the end of the year this time.

No, but there was a 15% increase in 2006. So 20% over 3 years, which is around 6.6%.......

In todays Gulf News:

http://www.gulf-news.com/business/Re.../10178153.html

"Landlords whose rents are lower than the market value can protest at the rent committee at Dubai's Municipality, said Bin Ghalita."

Looks like they will be even busier than I thought!

Fair enough, but still well below inflation.

I agree, but if our salary had been increased to match inflation then we wouldn't object to paying more rent but it hasn't our housing allowance covers our rent with a bit left over for utilities etc, when we move I am hoping we won't have too much of an increase

Looks like the RERA chief is trying to moot this idea, anyway the Head of the Rent Committee has made it very clear that he does not favour "market rates" to be applied.

much of the groceries increase is due to outside market forces.

grain prices are at record levels and this has a knock-on effect for meat, poultry, egg prices etc.

Still, as a % of salary/income is manageable for most lower income groups. It is rent that is the killer for most folks.....
