Default 1 year residence visa?

A friend of a friend has accepted a job for a government depart (no idea which one to be honest) and has been given only a 1 year residence visa.

I'd not heard of a 1 year visa - is this new? Why would they not offer the 3 year?

Any ideas?

http://www.dubaifaqs.com/visa-UAE.php- Shows table of visas,2 of which are for 1 year. Doubt your friend falls into either category Auto.Administrative foxes paw maybe????
Unless they are confusing the EIDA which all expats must have by 2010-valid for a year but certainly not a substitute for a visa....
Think she's in for an early introduction to the challenging bureaucracy of UAE.

yes but the new id card, is valid for as long as your visa, so if she hasnt been issued one yet she will get the standard 3 years, my hubs is having to do it because he is in the 'professional' category, and as he has just renewed his visa, the card will be for 3 years as long as your visa is left.

oh yes if you reach 65 then you have to be 'allowed' to stay on by the authorities, as over 65 they will not issue you any more visas, so this is only done for 'staff they want to retain' etc.
