Hello All

We are not in America yet but (Obama permitting we hope to be next year).

My Hubby and I hope to move to NH. Are there any ex-pats in that neck of the woods?

I'm heading to Vermont at the end of the month to marry my lovely fiancée - we'll practically be next door neighbours in American geography.

I'm in Andover, Mass. About 10-miles from the New Hampshire border.

By what means are you moving to the US i.e. which visa?

True, true Malashaan, Vermont is no distance from NH, I could borrow sugar in American geography terms! Good luck with the wedding the photos should be beautiful.

We intend to come on a H1b as Hubby has a Nursing degree. Then later on we will go for the old green card. Things look more promising than previously though as I think lots of people are not bothering to try and get in to the US due to the retrogression. It would be nice if Obama re-introduced the separate visas for Nurses but I cannot really blame him when he wants Americans to get the jobs.

It only took us 6 months from starting to apply to living in Oz, in comparison!

You may want to hop over to the US immigration forum for advice on this.

I know I hear the retrogression situation not improving all the time but initially we were just going to go straight for the green card and wait in the UK but a Partner Solicitor suggested the H1B (which is basically the same as the visa we used in Australia).

At the moment there are still about 40,000 left as of the beginning of August (that's of the 20,000 and 65,000 allocated) so we shall just have to see.

Alternatively I get divorced and marry a Yank!

I would seriously suggest a hop to the immigration forum. What you describe here was never even a possibility... with the exception of the yank husband scenario

And you do know YOU can't apply for an H-1B, right? Only an employer can.

Or are you already in the process?

And then only the emplyoer can choose if they want to sponsor you for a greencard. If they don't want to, hard cheese...

And as a spouse of someone with an H-1B, you would be on an H4 visa and couldn't legally work in the US (though could live).

Again, can't emphasis enough that you should look into this a little more.

Problem is, it's getting to be near $10K for a visa and nurses being dime a dozen, unless you've niche skills, it'll be hard finding someone willing to sponsor you for it.

Either way, good luck!

There is always a shortage of nurses but like you say you would have to be pretty specialised to qualify though.

Nurse anesthetist maybe, but I don't even think they have those back in the UK.
