Brits in Vegas?!
 

After living in Sydney for 4 years and having made some very lovely friends through a similar post I wrote on poms in oz I thought I would do the same as I move to Vegas in 2 weeks!

So.... just looking to make some friends who enjoy outdoors activities but equally like a wine and socialising... I love camping, hiking, crossfit, going out for coffee, dinner parties, dancing... pretty much everything...

There are quite a few Brits in Vegas, I go to Nevada at least once a year and always run into them. Some are self-made (own business) and some got married there.

always a fun bunch to hang out with.

I am back in Las Vegas for the last 2-3 months of 2016

Glad to hear there's a healthy expat scene in Las Vegas. Coincidentally I too lived in Sydney (3 years), and just like you I'm moving to Las Vegas for a full time job in about 3 weeks. Hey guys,

So great to see there are lots of Brits in Vegas.

I will be moving out there in July . Currently still bouncing back on a 90 day visa but need to be insured on my boyfriends car.

Does anyone have information about what the options are for a British person getting temporary motor insurance !?

I'm British and my boyfriend is American ?? I have a full British driving licence.

If you are just visiting the US, very unlikely to get any US insurance company to insure you in your own name.

Has your boyfriend enquired with his own insurance company about insuring you? - either adding you to his policy or having you as named driver?

(if you are a Brit you are not entering on a 90 day visa, you are entering the US for up to 90 days on the Visa Waiver program)

SanDiegogirl is correct, your boyfriend will most probably have to add you on his insurance. This will not be difficult, but they will want to know what your VISA status is, and whether or not you are legally allowed to drive in Nevada - that potentially could be a hurdle...

You can drive with your UK licence for the time being, but once you get settled over here (and become a legal resident) you will have to register with the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles Official Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles Website - dmvnv.com). Sadly the DMV does not recognize foreign licences as proof of ability to drive, so, I am sorry to report that you will have to go through the whole process of a written test (50 multiple choice questions and you must get a minimum of 40 correct to pass), eye test, and practical driving test. It's all straight forward, just a bit of a hassle to go through again.

3 tips, and this is the best advice you'll hear regarding driving in Nevada:

1) Don't underestimate the written test - it's not quantum physics, but it is well worth doing your homework. Time is money and money is revenue so make sure you pass it first time, otherwise you'll have to come back, wait in line, pay the fee, and do it all over again, and trust me you do not want that. Pick up the Nevada Driver's Manual at the DMV in person; everything in the test is covered in this book. If you read the book, you will pass the test.

2) Do not stand in line at the DMV! You will be waiting there forever. Make an appointment for a set time, and when you get there go to the appointment section and you will be served pretty quickly. Make sure you have your phone with you because they will text you when it is your turn to go to the counter (save you waiting inside and trying to listen out for your number over the crappy tannoy system).

3) Bring every document you have. They will want to know everything about you. Your passport, your I-94, SSN, proof of address, proof of employment...everything! Considering how many people they handle on a daily basis (it is never not busy there), I have yet to have a bad experience, and the agents I have dealt with were all very friendly...but...if you don't have your documents, they won't want to know you.
