Whats a career woman to do in Doha?
Hi folks,
I'll start with my standard disclaimer. I am a Pakistani/American who went to Scotland for my graduate degree and love many things about the UK so I would appreciate some help.
I am moving to Doha next month as a result of an internal transfer from the company that I work for here in the US. We have no kids and my wife works. She went back to school a couple of years back in order to switch careers to do what she liked. She now works for a non-profit that does a lot of work in African related to food security, youth employment and training etc.
Here is my challenge. We don't want to live apart for long but its too risky for her to leave her job here and move to Doha without securing anything there. So I put this question to all you sages out there. What options does she have in Doha? She has close to 7 years of experience in communication (broadcast journalism) and has been working in the development field for approximately 2 years (and no, she will not work for Al Jazeera ). She has a masters degree from a top university here in the US which also has a campus in Doha.
I would appreciate if you can give me a sense of the landscape in Doha for an accompanying spouse who wants to make some dough and while keeping busy.

lunch?
now, if she was an engineer, or a lawyer, or a nurse, or something employable, she'd be busy.

Plus the major plus factor is that the newsreaders are far better looking.

Most of the "hyphenated Americans" of Arab and Muslim origin who I met in the Middle East were tormented souls. Ill at ease in modern USA, they felt equally out of place in KSA and the other GCC countries.

The curious part of me wants to ask you to elaborate on your experience but that would just be inviting more generic (read ignorant) comments to your off-topic remark.

My generic and ignorant comment is that you will not be accepted in the ME as a pukkah American. You may think you are. To locals you will simply be another "Hindi" - regardless of which part of the Subcontinent you come from.
If that is unpalatable I am sorry but it is the truth.

I do take issue with your comment around Muslims adjusting to "Modern America". I have lived long enough in the US to see many faces of the US and its Muslim populace. There are many true blooded Americans who I don't consider Modern enough (depending on one's definition of Modern) and many Muslims I know are way too Modern for those Americans that I have had the pleasure of knowing who still cherish good family values.
