Is what my friend told me true about UAE hiring culture?
I'm an American and my friend who lives in the ME but not UAE tells me this about the UAE employers:
1) they really want to hire Americans, because Americans are not Arabs - he says they trust Americans more
2) my degree from a prestigious school matters a lot; he says they don't care what i learned or my grades; they care that i have a degree from a prestigious school
3) work experience is not a big deal at all he says because of #1 and #2
he says i would make a lot of money in UAE because of those two things. when i told him about my lack of relevant work experience he brushed it off and says i will make a ton of money because of #1 and #2
is he right?

And you're an inexperienced but trustworthy American with a degree from a prestigious school wanting to make a ton of money?
Hmmm.

They're all stupid there anyway right, am I right? *does devil sign with hand*

What is your prestigious school?
I'm merely curious.
Ivy League? Stanford? Northwestern/JHU/WUSTL?
I have a degree from a "prestigious" American university but there are very few alums in the UAE. Maybe ten at the most.
There was probably a time not too long ago (even as recent as 2008) where if you walked the walk and talked the talk you could impress yourself into a higher paying position based on your university degree. But the Arabs have wisened up.

Re: Is what my friend told me true about UAE hiring culture?
it's a top 15 school based on pretty much most rankings and is a household name.
so, let me ask you all this, and hopefully it doesn't come across as pretentious at all, but just i want to have a rough idea of my marketability in the UAE or other Gulf countries versus North America/Europe:
does the fact that i am an american and have a diploma from a top school put me in some high echelon in the eyes of recruiters/employers over there? or will it merely save my resume from being tossed right away? or not even that?
i'm trying to figure out if by ignoring that region i'm not missing out on much at all or if instead the reality is "ignore that region?? what are you crazy? people like you are in high demand over there! send your resume out ASAP!"

If being American does have an impact, it won't be because you're American, but because you're a western expat.

Re: Is what my friend told me true about UAE hiring culture?
hey i'm just asking because of what i was told. believe me it would have never in a million years entered my mind to leave north america to get a job in some scorching desert country with strict laws curtailing personal freedom. but since he told me about it i just wanted to find out if i'm missing out on some goldmine. doesn't seem so from perusing this forum.
