Default Riyadh, Al Hamra

I have accepted a teaching job in Saudi Riyadh and will be living in the Al Hamra compound.

What is life in Riyadh like? good and bad points welcome?

Life in Al Hamra? the oppertunity to socialise within the compound?

do the arabs get on with brits and vice versa?

all points of view welcome.

Congrats on your new job!

Al Hamra is really nice and I'm sure you'll make many new friends there.

The life/social scene in Riyadh is what you make it but it takes constant networking, did I say networking...let me repeat, networking!

The arabs & the brits get along fine. The UK is one of their favorite holiday destinations.

Don't expect the same standard of driving as back home. Also, if you have an accident, you will have to leave the car exactly where the accident happened, until the Police arrive, which can take hours. Its a very weird concept and which causes traffic chaos whenever even a minor bump occurs. A Police report is also needed to undertake even the smallest repair. Needless to say, the Police speak little or no English so, if you hit a local, be prepared to be classed as the guilty party. On the other hand, if you hit a stationery vehicle driven by an Indian/Pakistani, it will probably be his fault.
